Chris Lantz of Extreme Sculpting
Chris has been carving full time since he was 19. He now lives in Northeast Georgia with his wife, 3 kids, and dog on 2 acres. He enjoys hiking, biking, long naps, and freshly mowed grass. He is a passionate person who cuts no corners in his artistic process. Chris graduated high school in 2009 and went directly to work. He is often asked about his art background; he has none! Chris has always enjoyed working with his hands and creating things, but he received no formal instruction prior to starting chainsaw carving.

What are some of your goals as a chainsaw carver?
One of my main goals in carving is to make people FEEL. I think creating your standard bear, eagle, owl is cool and I enjoy the process. But I live for those projects where my client gives me artistic freedom and unleashes my inner creativity! I have notebooks and sketch pads and a brain full of amazing ideas waiting to come to life. The only possible barriers to that are time and budget; otherwise, the sky is the limit!
I want to break out of the stigma of a “wood carver”, and step into the realm of artists. My business took a serious change in direction in 2020 and so far in ‘21 it has proven to be a good move for us. My goal is to create more masterpieces, and to carve pieces I love so others can love them, as well.

How much does a chainsaw carving cost?
This question is one of my favorites and one of my least favorites... They can cost whatever you want, basically. I’ll explain... I can carve eagle themed pieces for $300 and eagle themed pieces for $30,000 and everywhere in between. The same goes for wolves, bears, pelicans, fill in the blank. If you have a budget of $300, $3,000, or $3,000,000 I can honor that and we will work together to come up with a design we both love. Don’t let cost be a reason you don’t reach out. I strive to work within every person’s budget. My general inventory runs low 90% of the year, and as a result I do a lot of carvings as custom orders. For reference, I typically offer carvings in $50 increments from $300-$1,000 and $100 increments from there. If you have any specific questions or wonder if I can carve something special for Dad for Christmas, don’t hesitate to reach out!
What is your favorite subject to carve?
Do I have to pick just one? Right now, I’m really enjoying carving wolves. I carved one back in April and enjoyed studying and diving deep into what a wolf actually looks like. I love carving animals, because they have so many different natural looks. A bear can be standing, sitting, leaning, nursing its young, sleeping. climbing a tree, catching a fish... the list goes on. The same can be said for owls, eagles, or any other animal. Soon, I hope to carve a combination of animals in one tree. I just have to find a log large enough and settle on a design. (Suggestions welcomed on what animals to include!)
Pretty soon I'll be starting on a project including eagles, wolves, and bears in three separate sculptures. It'll be interesting to see how they tie in together.
